Contranopposto

We have the titled pelvis and twist to the shoulders and upper arms but no posto to be standing or running upon. It's a four-legged term. Or a good name for a little Italian film.

I bought a box of markers last year and have been enjoying playing with them. My only problem is the color limitation. I'm sure there's some marker product on the market now that would allow me to blend colors better and get a bit more subtle but even with this limitation, they've been fun. Over the weekends, I am trying to vary the mediums each day so, here's a little marker portrait of Tallulah.

Sail

This was a very quick demo to prove some sort of point in class early last year. It's smudged and the page is a bit too large for my scanner bed so looks discolored but I love the movement. I rarely have the patience to make a careful pencil drawing anymore. I seem to attack the page rather than carefully work at it. Part of it may be that I am anxious to get to painting or maybe it's too much coffee. But seriously, although I am wowed be great technique (as much for the patience it takes as anything), I find that evidence of an artist's nervous system is far more interesting than astounding representation. That being said, sometimes you can clearly see both simultaneously!

Napping

A quick and dirty pencil sketch of Tutti at rest in the afternoon sun. Crude because I raced through it and anyway, she moves as soon as I start to sketch whether she's awake or asleep. But I think of the Gainsborough pencil sketches of a cat and she was in motion in some of them.

These sketches of Tallulah are inevitable and, I predict, will crop up many weekends.

Shed Next Door

This is an example of a pen and ink I force myself to make when all I really want to do is scribble madly because I've taken too much coffee. This shed sits directly across from the window above my drawing tables. I love to sit out in the yard (when it's warm enough or not too hot) and make paintings and drawings.

Rusty Grove

I received a little package of brand new M. Graham colors. M. Graham has just added a bunch of new colors to their stock. Naturally, the first thing I did was open them and try them out. They're really marvelous!

Here's what I used: Quinacridone Rust, Nickel Quinacridone Gold, Azo Green, Sepia and a little dab of Prussian mixed with Cobalt Blue.

Alley Bins

This is the far south east corner of my back yard at the alley where the trash bins live and I go out for and come back in again from my neighborhood walks.

Analysis

Another little habit of mine is to leaf through painted images I'm fond of and do a little pen and ink to get the feel of the composition into my fingers. This Caspar David Friedrich Monk by the Sea, for example in which I just looks at the fields of space - no value.

I don't try very hard to get the quick sketch exactly right because once I do it and look back at the original, I can see the composition of the original better.

This side of the hedge

This side of the hedge
pen & ink, 8.5 x 8"

After posting the pen & inks here on Friday and a drawing on Thursday at My Great Day, I had a flurry of emails from readers who were surprised to see that I draw. Of course I draw, I thought. I teach drawing. But how would they know? Or you, for that matter.

This magazine of blogs is really designed to show and sell my watercolor paintings so the plan was not to show drawings. But I've realized that although I know that it took me years to extricate myself from the pencil as a watercolor painter, you don't know that. So I'll post some drawings regularly, just for fun — both pencil and pen and ink. I will also write about using pencil and pen & ink as a painter someday soon on Landscape into Art. I hope you enjoy the drawings. Just for the record, I draw every day. It's important.

Thank you for viewing Suzanne McDermott's landscape art.

Form and Composition

Here are a few examples of little pen and ink studies I make to analyze form and composition in landscape photographs that catch my eye. Often little bits of advertisements, when I go through a purge of magazines, I try to sit down, leaf through and clip images that strike me.

Usually, I'll edit out any object or being in the landscape but in this case, I left a few of the wild horses galloping up the hill.

I could not tell you what the original photographs look like as, once I make the sketch, I tend to toss the reference.

I'm keeping the John Cage post up on My Great Day for at least another day because it's a good one, I really like having him there and the tone it's setting for the new year. It's also serving as a reference for my posting on Landscape into Art today.

This is a good hello to the new year. Pale washes with a swept clean feeling like a new slate, a blank page.
