Sadly, we've lost a couple of birds who were startled into the studio windows at the wrong angle or too high a speed. This female cardinal was one of them.

I used a regular pencil then went over parts with some watercolor pencil and finally, a little water.

poor wee bird! I have streamers hanging over my windows to break up the reflections of trees in the window. no more dead birds.
good painting by the way!

I did have some anti-reflective something or other when this bird flew in but she was startled while on the ground and took off in a rush. A good reminder to put some protection back up.

Lovely sketch, Suzanne, and poor bird. My parents had the same problem with their glass patio divider. They adhered some bird silhouettes to the glass (these things are available especially for that purpose in Holland) and the problem was solved. I have never seen them in the U.S., though.

Thanks, Mineke. My solution has been to tape a triangle of paper to the window. Not very attractive but It works in most cases — obviously, not all.
